A brief look at Australia
Australia is the smallest continent, and the largest island, settled by immigration from the ancestors of today's Indigenous people; and later by the British settlers during the late 1700's; the gold seekers of the early 1800's; to the post-World War II migration from Europe and the continuing migration of people from Asia, the Middle East, Europe, Africa and America.
Australia is made up of five states and two territories, which have their own governing powers. The Australian Government, headed by a Prime Minister and party, has federal powers overall. Australia continues to be part of the British Commonwealth, with Queen Elizabeth as the reigning monarch.
The centre of Australia is arid, and despite its tropical regions, it is mainly a dry continent, with most of its population living along or near coastal areas.
The Living in Australia, and Enjoying Australia sections, using a map of Australia, provide more information about the distinctions between the different states and territories of Australia.
