Places to Visit in the Northern Territory
Distance takes on a whole new meaning in the outback, as do words like remote, however despite the austere surroundings, the Northern Territory has a mesmerising beauty that is unrivalled anywhere else in Australia. Here are a few of the possible sites you can visit in the Top End.
Litchfield National Park
Just over 100 kilometres south of Darwin is Litchfield National Park, which holds most of the Tabletop Range, as well as magnificent waterfalls and swimming holes.
Kakadu National Park
Approximately 150 kilometres east of Darwin is the main entrance to Kakadu National Park, a World Heritage site, listed for both its natural and cultural importance. Kakadu is also known for its rock art, and there are tours available to take you to the main sites within the park.
Arnhem Land
Arnhem Land Aboriginal Reserve is a huge area that covers the eastern half of the Top End. Much of the reserve is closed to visitors, however permits can be obtained to travel independently through certain sections. Again, there are tours available to travel into Arnhem Land.
Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park
Commonly known by its former name, Ayers Rock, Uluru is probably the most recognisable rock formation in Australia, and in general visitors base themselves at Alice Springs, and use the various tours and private transporters available to visit the area. Kata Tjuta, or what was known as the Olgas, are thirty kilometres west of Uluru, and are visited as part of the same tour.
