The public health care system in Australia is called Medicare, which is funded by the Federal Government, by taxes and by the Medicare levy surcharge.

Medicare provides either free or low cost medical care, and you will need to apply for a Medicare card to be able to access services offered (particularly if you will be living permanently in Australia).

There is information via the opposite links, about Medicare and the various application forms, but keep in mind that applying for a Medicare card can only occur once you’re in Australia, at your local Medicare Office.

If you are in Australia for a short period, Medicare offers specific health care for visitors from a number of countries, and you can find out more by clicking onto "Medicare Reciprocal Care".

Australia has a number of private health schemes, which can offer immediate health care, and cover other costs relating to health care.
